PAUL CURRERI & DEVON SPROULE Zoo Gang’s expat hosts Curreri and Sproule were early members of the Tin Angel family and have been based on this side of the ocean since late last summer. The couple tour and record separately but share a poetic, genre-defying ethos and, most recently, a haircut. This set will of course spotlight their far-too-rare duets.

Boat to Row have navigated the shores of the UK this past year, stopping in at Dot-to-Dot, Truck, Wood, Moseley Folk and Gloucester Underground Festivals. Tin Angel Records and For Folk’s Sake are teaming up again to support London’s Integrated Cancer Centre, this time to the soundtrack of Devon Sproule’s new song, “Send Me to Coventry (for Christmas).”

Devon recorded this gorgeous low-fi gem on her phone in Berlin, for a friend, and it landed as a standout track on the recent For Folk’s Sake compilation “For Folk’s Sake, It’s Christmas”. Win the competition and along with various Devon Sproule and FFS-related musical prizes, your video will be linked to Devon’s own video for the song, posted to her website, and announced in her monthly email newsletter. Help us celebrate the season and spread the word about this wonderful compilation!

Here’s how the competition works: E-mail the Tin Angel team – tinangelcompetition@gmail.com – with the subject title “Send Me To Coventry” and we’ll send you a private link to the track.

Devon Sproule’s album “I Love You, Go Easy” is one of those wordy-word albums. The singer-songwriter’s unusual but transfixing voice has a lot to report, her lyrical stanzas dense against currents of a jazz horns, or pedal steel, or emotional piano lines.That is to say, though, there’s a lot to hear, but not too much. The sheer amount of narrative is dispersed seemingly among genres. iTunes indicates this is a country album. The opener’s soft pop would say otherwise. The single “Now’s the Time” sounds like Ben Kweller fronting the Flying Burrito Brothers, while the title track is an “easy” jazz tune.

Then there’s “The Unmarked Animals,” which divides its time between lounge rock and playful disco, with a slick guitar freak-out, congas, “the curvy stuff.”

Below is the exclusive premiere of that song’s music video, mysterious and glittery with some sustained eye contact. It’s a little something that goes hand-in-hand with this wordsmith, who was raised on a commune and, seemingly, on a steady diet of country-rock: she never sounds miserable. There’s a little glint in her eye.

“I Love You, Go Easy” really is among one of my favorite full-length albums this year; Sproule (rhymes with coal) isn’t on tour currently in the U.S., but try to catch her and her expert team on the road at a later date.

Just back from a brisk bike ride to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof to buy a rail pass.  I got a last-minute invite to open some shows for Mr Bill “Smog” Callahan and the first is tomorrow in Lausanne, Switzerland.  I’ll also be joining him in Norway and Sweden!  Details are below.

Hi everyone, Greetings from Berlin, the jet lag almost completely evaporated. Even though we can’t pronounce our street’s name, Devon and I are settling quite nicely into our cozy new flat. Yesterday, we bought her a shiny used bicycle (oh lawd). Our cat misses the Virginia woods something terrible, but we spent about $500 to get her here, so she can stuff it.

Anyshnitzel, my English brothers and I are terribly excited to be heading out on a short UK / Ireland run to celebrate the October release of the new record, THE BIG SHITTY. Coincidentally, we recorded it this past January here in Berlin.
